Colloque | Critical Margins: Neolithic Connections Beyond the Fertile Crescent

Organisé par Marie-Laure Chambrade & Hala Alarashi

Résumé/Abstract
The conference Critical Margins: Neolithic Connections Beyond the Fertile Crescent organized by the CEPAM – UMR 7264 CNRS and the ISAC of the University of Chicago, in Nice, September 10-12, 2025, intends to investigate the mechanisms of the neolithisation and its spread, from the arid margins of the Fertile Crescent to the desert confines of the Arabian Peninsula and the Nile Valley. Long considered of lesser interest than the so-called « core area », these margins are experiencing an unprecedented surge in archaeological fieldwork. This research highlights the diversity of economic strategies and cultural components and the need to move beyond the center/periphery dichotomy to embrace the complexity of the process and inter-regional connections, particularly in the later Neolithic (ca. 7000-5000 cal BCE). Through a collective and interdisciplinary approach, with substantial time devoted to discussion, the ultimate aim of the Critical Margins conference will be to review the definition of neolithisation in Southwest Asia in the light of the role played by these regions.
