Résumé du projet


À la fin de la néolithisation au Proche-Orient (PPNC – Late Neolithic, 7e-6e millénaires), une vaste conquête des marges arides a lieu tandis que de grands centres villageois du Croissant fertile sont abandonnés. Les premières hypothèses proposées furent celles de mouvements de population depuis les régions plus arrosées de l’ouest en direction des steppes arides orientales, comme conséquence d’une pression démographique croissante. Bien que l’on s’accorde de plus en plus sur l’existence de processus socio-culturels plus dynamiques et multidirectionnels à l’origine de ce vaste phénomène, sa complexité reste à préciser. Pour atteindre cet objectif et grâce à une approche systémique, MARGINS vise à proposer de nouveaux scénarios de ‘conquête’ et à en clarifier les facteurs d'influence, en particulier la part respective des composantes environnementales et des choix socio-économiques. Pour cela, le projet étudie les modes de peuplement et l’exploitation des ressources à travers les activités de subsistance et leurs adaptations aux contraintes des milieux arides. Je m'interroge en particulier, d’une part, sur le rôle du nomadisme pastoral, considéré par la suite comme un mode de vie marginal mais qui aurait pu être moteur de cette occupation durable des zones arides et, d’autre part, sur le statut des steppes de Syrie comme possible berceau de cette conquête et sur leurs relations avec les steppes de Jordanie plus au sud. Le projet s'appuie, pour la première fois pour la période et la région considérées, sur une approche multi-scalaire et diachronique des mécanismes socio-économiques, mise en œuvre grâce à des analyses statistiques et spatiales, et l’appui des SIG et de la télédétection. MARGINS a pour objectif de franchir les barrières qui ont freiné une approche globale de la ‘conquête’ néolithique des zones arides du Proche-Orient en réunissant une combinaison inédite de méthodes, de spécialistes et d'institutions – l’UMR CEPAM du CNRS en France et l'Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (anciennement Oriental Institute) de l'Université de Chicago aux États-Unis – impliqués dans le traitement du plus vaste ensemble de données archéologiques recueillies à la fois en Syrie et en Jordanie au cours des 50 dernières années.

Project summary


At the end of the Near Eastern neolithization process (PPNC-Late Neolithic, 7th-6th millennium), a wide conquest of arid margins occurred while large villages collapsed in the Fertile Crescent. Early hypotheses posited that population movements reflected demographic pressure and took place from the western greener valleys to eastern steppes. Despite a nowadays agreement on more dynamic processes of multi-directional cultural interchanges, the complexity of this wide phenomenon remains to be understood. To achieve this goal and thanks to an integrative approach, MARGINS aims to propose renewed scenarios of ‘conquest’ and to clarify its factors of influence, in particular the respective impacts of environmental components and socio-economic choices. To do so, the project will investigate settlement patterns and land use through subsistence activities and their adaptations to constraints of arid contexts. As an impetus for the project, I question in particular the role of the pastoral nomadism, later considered as a marginal way of life, as a central driving force for this sustainable occupation of arid lands, and the status of the Syrian steppes as a cradle for the conquest towards the south, in Jordan. The project will rely for the first time for the period and region under study on a multi-scalar and diachronic approach of socio-economic mechanisms implemented thanks to quantitative and spatial analyses with the help of statistics, GIS and remote sensing technics. MARGINS will break through barriers that have prevented a “big picture approach” of the Neolithic ‘conquest’ of near eastern arid lands by bringing together an unprecedented combination of methods, interdisciplinary specialists and renown international institutions – the CNRS research unit CEPAM in France and the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (former Oriental Institute) of the University of Chicago in the USA – involved in the processing of the largest set of raw archaeological data gathered both in Syria and in Jordan in the past 50 years.
