Main research interests

As a biomolecular archaeologist, my research focuses on understanding the food systems, adhesive production and economy of bee products of late prehistoric populations. I achieve this by exploiting biological archives that do not record any morphological characteristics that could indicate their nature or origin. These amorphous organic natural substances bear witness to the wide range of products that were collected, processed, used or consumed. They may be of animal origin (e.g. fats, dairy products or beeswax), plant origin (e.g. oils, waxes, tars or resins), or fossil origin (e.g. amber or bitumen).

My work is highly interdisciplinary, spanning organic chemistry, biochemistry, prehistory and ethno-archaeology. It is part of collaborative research networks at national and international levels, and is funded by research programmes at national level (involvement in three ANR projects), European (co-supervision of PhD as part of the ITN (International Training Network) – EJD (European Joint Doctorates) ChemArch project with partners in England and Spain) and international (co-applicant for the “Foodways in West Africa” project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and involving partners in Switzerland, Senegal and France).
