Quotation

Translation (En)

Dexiteros "on the right hand". If it is derived from dexios "on the right hand", it ought to be *dexiōteros, as logiōteros. Therefore it is a derivative. From dexios is derived *dexieros, as from aristos aristeros "on the left hand", from phthonos phthoneros "jealous", from mogos mogeros "painful", and with addition of /t/, dexiteros. Thus Phuiloxenus

Comment

Derivational etymology. Philoxenus says that δεξιτερός cannot be the comparative of δεξιός because one would in that case expect *δεξιώτερος. Therefore it is a derivative from δεχιός, built with a suffix -ερός, for which he provides parallels. And then the /t/ is added, as a pathos. Herodian says that the word arose from an analogy with ἀριστερός (συνεκδρομή "illegitimate analogical extension")

Modern etymology

Δεξιτερός is not directly derived from δεξιός but is a parallel derivative *deksi-tero-, matching Lat. dexter (Beekes, EDG)
