Quotation

(Orion) Δίκτυον. παρὰ τὸ βαλεῖν, ὃ ἐστὶ δίκειν

Translation (En)

Diktuon "fishing net": from baleîn "to throw", that is, dikeîn

Comment

Derivational descriptive etymology. The wording in Orion is not the correct one, and Lentz changes it into δίκτυον: παρὰ τὸ δικεῖν ὅ ἐστι βάλλειν (rightly so, with the etymon first and the usual synonym afterwards). The fishing net is the "thrown" one

Modern etymology

Unclear. Mycenaean has de-ku-tu-wo-ko, probably /dektu-worgos/, therefore a *δεκτυ. This does not agree with the traditional derivation from δικεῖν (Beekes, EDG)

Persistence in Modern Greek

MG still has δίκτυο
