Quotation

λαύρην δὲ Φιλόξενος τὴν ῥύμην φησὶ κατὰ τὸ ἔτυμον, δι’ ἧς ὁ λαὸς ῥεῖ.

Translation (En)

Philoxenus says the laurē ["lane"] is the street, etymologically the one through which people (laos) flow (rheî)

Comment

Compositional etymology, which is not very frequent in Philoxenus. The first member is identified as λαός, and retains in the lemma only its first syllable. Of the second member only the initial consonant is kept. It is a functional etymology: the function of the lane or the street is to allow people to go from one place to another, here with the metaphor of the flow of people (ῥέω). The lemma is quoted under its Ionic form λαύρη
