Compositional etymology. The first member is the intensive prefix λα-, replaced in the manuscript of Orion by its synonym λίαν (elliptic etymology) – the original λα- is preserved in the Epimerisms and the Et. Magnum. It is assumed to undergo a change from /a/ to /ē/, which was familiar to Greek scholars. The second member is identified as the participle of "to go", without any change since λήϊον is neuter. An etymology by a verb "to move / to grow" is assumed for several plant names. Here it is assumed but for the field where the plant grows, which is more original. This suggests that the real etymon could be ἱέναι "to send forth" rather than ἰέναι "to go", and that the verb was misidentified in a psilotic state of the language, owing to the fact that ἱέναι is very rare, prose using the verb only in combination with preverbs.
