Heinrich Barth is the discoverer of the Benue river. Its confluence with the Faro forms the south of the Mega-Chad region.

Ferdinand Moras In: August Petermann, 1854. An account of the progress of the Expedition to Central Africa.
Ferdinand Moras was a lithographer from Wuppertal (Germany) who might have met Petermann in London. Moras later moved to Philadelphia (USA) where he became quite famous. Petermann had received letters from Barth's expedition, which he used in his royal folio. Petermann was mainly interested in the expedition's cartographical information which resulted in a first detailed map, also depicting the Mega-Chad region. Moras' lithograph shows a map in the centre framed by geographically informed illustrations of the main stations of the expedition. The illustration on the bottom represents lake Chad.
