Il existe dans la litt\u00e9rature antique et m\u00e9di\u00e9vale une longue tradition de r\u00e9cits et descriptions de bizarreries et merveilles naturalistes et en particulier animales. Ces r\u00e9cits ont \u00e9t\u00e9 g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement pris \u00e0 la l\u00e9g\u00e8re, voire avec condescendance par la critique moderne, par les hommes \u00e9clair\u00e9s des lumi\u00e8res de l\u2019esprit nouveau, scientifique, r\u00e9solument moderne. Mais l\u2019illusion n\u2019est peut-\u00eatre pas l\u00e0 o\u00f9 elle semble loger. Cette tradition ancienne t\u00e9moigne d\u2019une curiosit\u00e9 et d\u2019un \u00e9tonnement devant la plasticit\u00e9 du vivant et la diversit\u00e9 des organismes et des facult\u00e9s des \u00eatres vivants&nbsp;: souris rongeuses de fer, animaux gu\u00e9risseurs, rituels sociaux sophistiqu\u00e9s, alternance sexuelle, dispersion des cerveaux, pr\u00e9monition animale, biomim\u00e9tisme, \u2026 Si l\u2019on cesse de s\u2019obnubiler avec les monstres exemplaires des bestiaires m\u00e9di\u00e9vaux, se d\u00e9couvrent de nombreux r\u00e9cits dont l\u2019\u00e9tranget\u00e9 r\u00e9pond \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranget\u00e9 de la nature elle-m\u00eame. L\u2019enjeu de ce colloque est de se pencher, gr\u00e2ce au regard des savants anciens et modernes, sur des questions zoologiques sous l\u2019angle de l\u2019extravagance et dans leurs modes non ordinaires, et de r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 la fa\u00e7on dont les bizarreries naturelles sont per\u00e7ues, admises, interpr\u00e9t\u00e9es, et renouvellent parfois le regard port\u00e9 sur les animaux et le vivant en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral. Aujourd\u2019hui comme hier les ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes naturels sont et demeurent pour beaucoup \u00e9tranges et difficiles \u00e0 expliquer. Dans le domaine des comportements, les biologistes modernes ont forg\u00e9 le concept <em>d\u2019instinct<\/em> pour servir de principe explicatif g\u00e9n\u00e9ral. Certains aujourd\u2019hui recourent \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e d\u2019un \u2018sixi\u00e8me sens\u2019 pour situer certaines capacit\u00e9s qui d\u00e9passent l\u2019entendement, comme les capacit\u00e9s perceptives ou migratoires de certaines esp\u00e8ces. Les recherches des biologistes sur les facult\u00e9s atypiques des animaux, qui ont tous d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 une forme d\u2019excellence extraordinaire dans un domaine ou un autre, int\u00e9ressent \u00e0 juste titre les techniciens du naturel et de l\u2019artificiel (m\u00e9decins, les industriels, etc.). Pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment parce qu\u2019elles sont \u00ab&nbsp;extraordinaires&nbsp;\u00bb. Il est plus que probable que les mod\u00e8les de fonctionnement physiologiques ou \u00e9thologiques que nous avons adopt\u00e9s au 20<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle soit sch\u00e9matiques et inadapt\u00e9s \u00e0 la diversit\u00e9 biologique. Restaurer l\u2019\u00e9tonnement, non pas comme une \u00e9motion d\u2019ignorant, mais un lucide moteur de recherche scientifique, et prendre au s\u00e9rieux le discours de l\u2019\u00e9tonn\u00e9 permet de remettre en jeu le savoir tr\u00e8s modeste et t\u00e2tonnant des sp\u00e9cialistes du vivant.<br>Cet appel \u00e0 communication s\u2019adresse donc \u00e0 tous ceux qui, historiens des sciences, historiens des textes, biologistes, s\u2019int\u00e9ressent \u00e0 ce qui n\u2019est pas le \u00ab&nbsp;r\u00e9gime ordinaire de la nature&nbsp;\u00bb selon les mots d\u2019Aristote, mais ses manifestations d\u00e9concertantes. Les communications pourront s\u2019int\u00e9resser \u00e0 des motifs de cette \u00e9tranget\u00e9 naturelle, dans l\u2019exp\u00e9rience ou dans l\u2019histoire, qu\u2019elle touche \u00e0 des aspects anatomiques, physiologiques, relatifs aux comportements comme dans les domaines de la communication, de la technicit\u00e9, ou de ce qu\u2019on nomme faute de mieux le \u00ab&nbsp;sixi\u00e8me sens animal&nbsp;\u00bb.<br>Les communications pourront \u00eatre pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es en allemand, anglais, espagnol, fran\u00e7ais ou italien. Une version \u00e9crite des communications sera demand\u00e9e et soumise \u00e0 un \u00e9diteur rapidement apr\u00e8s la conf\u00e9rence. The nature of animals, like that of plants, \u00ab\u00a0overflows on all sides\u00a0\u00bb (Theophrastus). In ancient and medieval literature, there is a long tradition of accounts and descriptions of naturalist oddities and wonders, particularly concerning animals. These accounts have generally been taken lightly or even treated with condescension by modern critics, by enlightened minds shaped by the spirit of a new, scientific, and resolutely modern era. However, the illusion may not be where it appears to be.<br>This ancient tradition testifies to a curiosity and a sense of wonder about the plasticity of life and the diversity of organisms and faculties of living beings: iron-gnawing mice, healing animals, sophisticated social rituals, sexual alternation, dispersed brains, animal premonition, biomimicry, etc. If we stop fixating on the exemplary monsters of medieval bestiaries, we uncover numerous accounts whose strangeness corresponds to the strangeness of nature itself.<br>The aim of this conference is to explore zoological questions through the lens of extravagance and in their non-ordinary modes, drawing on both ancient and modern scholarly perspectives. It seeks to examine how natural oddities are perceived, accepted, and interpreted, and how they sometimes renew our understanding of animals and life in general.<br>Today, as in the past, natural phenomena remain strange and difficult to explain for many. In the field of behavior, modern biologists have developed the concept of instinct as a general explanatory principle. Some today invoke the idea of a \u00ab\u00a0sixth sense\u00a0\u00bb to account for certain abilities that surpass human understanding, such as the perceptive or migratory capacities of some species. Biologists&rsquo; research on the atypical faculties of animals\u2014each of which has developed some extraordinary form of excellence in one area or another\u2014rightly interests specialists in both natural and artificial sciences (such as doctors and engineers). Precisely because these faculties are \u00ab\u00a0extraordinary.\u00a0\u00bb<br>It is highly likely that the physiological or ethological models we adopted in the 20th century are schematic and partly inadequate for understanding biological diversity. Restoring a sense of astonishment\u2014not as an emotion of ignorance, but as a lucid driver of scientific inquiry\u2014and taking seriously the discourse of those who marvel at nature allows us to challenge and refine the modest and tentative knowledge of life sciences specialists.<br>This call for papers is therefore addressed to all those\u2014historians of science, historians of texts, biologists\u2014who are interested in what Aristotle described as \u00ab\u00a0the non-ordinary order of nature,\u00a0\u00bb in its most disconcerting manifestations. Presentations may focus on motifs of natural strangeness, whether in experience or history, addressing anatomical, physiological, or behavioral aspects, as well as fields such as communication, technical skills, or what is vaguely referred to as the \u00ab\u00a0animal sixth sense.\u00a0\u00bb<br>The organizers welcome proposals (in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish). Note that a written version of the papers will be rapidly submitted to an editor. Conference papers will be 25 minutes, with 10 minutes for discussion. &nbsp;Interested scholars from all academic levels are invited to send an abstract of no more than 500 words to <a href=\"mailto:cepam.zoomathia@univ-cotedazur.fr\">cepam.zoomathia@univ-cotedazur.fr<\/a> by&nbsp;<strong>May 05, 2025<\/strong>. Participants will be notified in <strong>June 15, 2025<\/strong>. Accepted papers will be presented on an equal footing with invited speakers.
