Quotation

Τὸ δὲ γνῶμι πόθεν γίνεται; Παρὰ τὸ γνῶ, τοῦτο παρὰ τὸ νοῦς νοὸς νοῶ, καὶ κατὰ συγκοπὴν, νῶ, καὶ πλεονασμῷ τοῦ Γ, γνῶ.

Translation (En)

Where does gnōmi "thought" come from? From gnō "to know", the latter from nous "mind", noos, noô "to think", and with syncope , and  with addition of /g/, gnô

Comment

Correct derivational etymology. Γνῶμι is a iotacizing spelling.. Choeroboscus then adds the etymology of γνῶ, which is assumed to be νοέω

Parallels

Etym. Gudianum Additamenta, gamma, p. 318 (Γνώμη· παρὰ τὸ γνώσω γνώμη, ‹ὡς› στήσω στήμη, φήσω φήμη· ἢ ἀπὸ τοῦ νοήσω νοήμη καὶ νώμη καὶ γνώμη· ἢ παρὰ τὸ νωμῶ, τὸ μερίζω, νώμη καὶ γνώμη)

Modern etymology

Γνώμη is derived from the Indo-European root *g̑neh3- "to know", found in Greek in γιγνώσκω, ἔγνων, in Latin in nōscō, nōvī, and in English in to know (Beekes, EDG)

Persistence in Modern Greek

The word "γνώμη" is still used in Modern Greek, with the meaning 'opinion, view'. There also is the phrase "κοινή γνώμη" which means "common opinion" (Triandafyllidis Dictionary of MG).
